Although irrigation is the primary job of reuse water, there are other non-irrigation applications as well, that save fresh water from being used for the same purpose.
- Broward County/Wheelabrator – Broward’s waste-to-energy program is operated at two Wheelabrator plants in the county. Approximately 80 percent of the water used at the two plants is recycled, and that saves almost 1 million gallons of fresh water per day.
- Miami-Dade Water and Sewer/FP&L – The two entities are working together to use treated wastewater as cooling water for two proposed nuclear units at Turkey Point as well as for an existing unit. Under the proposed plan, Miami-Dade will produce and deliver up to 90 million gallons per day of recycled water for cooling the facilities.
